One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Play by Dale Wasseman
7 - 10 July 2010, 7.30pm, Theatre Royal, Rutherford Street, Nelson
The central character, McMurphy, has been sentenced to a term of confinement (until he is deemed better) to a psychiatric ward. It was either this or prison, so the former was chosen naturally.
By contrast the patients of the mental institution volunteered to be there. This seems extremely odd at first….but as Cuckoo’s Nest progresses one sees the long term effect that conditioning can have on people. The play is extremely funny until….well,it isn’t!
Don’t miss this hilarious but moving modern classic.

Julian "Crown Julz" Taylor was introduced to the mystery of music by his half Bajan grandmother whose parents had eloped to NZ to escape the cultural taboo of mixed-race marriages in Barbados. She played piano in the Caribbean style and sang Bajan songs to Julian when he was a baby, infusing him with the rhythms and melodies of Barbados.
Ben Wood is a prolific multi-instrumentalist heavily involved in the Wellington music scene. He plays drums with top NZ reggae band Hikoikoi as well as guitar with Hannah Howes. He records his own material under the moniker The Lorax.
Patrick Bleakly started out playing bass for Rick Bryant's band Mammal. He then joined Bruno Lawrence's legendary psychedelic rock band BLERTA and toured NZ and Australia with them. He then went onto form The Crocodiles with Fane Flaws. After a couple of years’ hiatus, he burst back into the scene as NZ jazz legend Johnathon Crayford's bass player.

Each year, to signal the start of the main fishing season for hoki and scallops, a commemorative service is held for those who have lost their lives at sea, and for their families.
Thousands of Nelsonians gather at the waterfront and the inner harbour is filled with fishing boats as the service is held. The moving ceremony includes a minute’s silence for those who have lost their lives at sea, and ends with the release of doves. Then the boats blast their horns, there is a sail-past and the festivities begin, with music, a ‘catch of the day’ auction and on-water demonstrations.

Like most young bands, they started out by playing small gigs at local pubs & various well known live venues. Then quickly started touring the university circuit. The band soon made a name for themselves with energetic and often outrageous live performances, appearing on stage either naked, caked with mud, or covered completely in body paint.
Therefore forming a solid and dedicated following throughout the live music scene. Head like a Hole were soon signed to Wildside Records and began their recording career. 1992 saw the release of their debut album, '13' which the band largley produced themselves. The single 'Fish across Face' successfully made it into the New Zealand Top 10 charts. In keeping with Head Like a Hole tradition the video for 'Fish across Face' included a scene where Nigel regurgitates an orange substance into Booga’s mouth and was promptly pulled off air.

Allison Cormack will be familiar to many Nelsonians. She was the winner of the Sealord Nelson Aria Competition in 2005, she performed at the Nelson Opera in the Park in 2006, and in West End to Broadway in 2007.
Her voice is a delicious rich and creamy spinto soprano and her careful selection of music ensures that it is always at its finest. She is a lover of all music but is most passionate about Verdi and feels his music is perfectly suited to her voice. She believes that his music is exciting yet sensible, challenging yet logical, and that he had a complete understanding of how the voice worked.
Opera, says Alli, is elegant but not exclusive. It was written for the people and is representative of the lives of real people. Love, violence, politics, intrigue and crime are all fundamental story lines in Opera.
The next career step for Alli is to undertake post-graduate studies, and she has chosen to do this at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in Glasgow, Scotland.
To make this dream come true, Alli must undertake some fund raising activities and her first event is Opera Unplugged, at the recently re-opened Theatre Royal!
